A Conversation About Content & Thanksgiving

On this morning’s walk, I had an unexpected conversation with a neighbour, about content.

This neighbour is now retired from what would commonly be described as a ‘biggup’ or fancy job with an international hotel chain, in many locations – countries and islands. Life, for them, used to be very fast-paced and it featured all the bells an’ whistles that make many people’s eyes wide with admiration.

The neighbour shared how they didn’t often make the best choices when they had an abundance of resources, but are now living with what looks like less but means much more.

We spoke a bit about pride and resourcefulness, defining your worth by things that expire (like material possessions and job descriptions), public perceptions, and goals that sometimes change with seasons…

I didn’t share much but listened a lot in that conversation intrigued by yet again another reminder that none of us knows what anyone else has fully gone through.

Flashbacks to of a couple conversations with fishermen on Oistins jetty – elderly men who have travelled extensively by sea but choose to live simply and peacefully…enjoying the land where many save for a year to visit for a few days…

Amidst the pace and pressure of today’s world, where anxiety is working its way up the ladder regardless of race and social status, the value of calm is becoming much more inviting to people who probably would have once rolled their eyes at the word.

Content is not the same as complacency.

It springs up as a fruit that is rooted in gratitude; thankfulness for what we’ve been given.

It doesn’t mean you don’t aspire…but if I had to think about an antonym to content, it would be complaint.

That’s why endurance is key and faith in God is essential.

I need to be clear at this point, because today – sure, I can write and say all this right now, but had you asked me to write about being content on one of my toughest days or in a heartbreaking season of loss, it would be extremely tough to put this post together in my head, far less in a blog post.

Because of the author and finisher of our faith, His promises and plan, content is possible even throughout changing circumstances.

You’re right – it’s not logical. That’s why it’s called faith.

Ever heard the saying, ‘misery loves company?’ Well, content doesn’t need a crowd, but it is a magnet because its besties are hope and joy. When we do our best to be thankful – to be content, upcoming highlights are recognized and experienced as sweet surprises – an overflow of blessings beyond what we already have.

Thanks so much for being a part of this journey, for taking time to read, share, listen to and comment on posts. I appreciate it and I appreciate you.

This year wasn’t the brightest of the bunch, but wuh! So-it-go sometimes! We are still here!

Whatever may come in 2020, I am thankful to have made it this far and to still have the gift of life, breath and purpose.

What are you thankful for right now? Feel free to share here
